Fabio Quagliarella’s diving header was wiped out by Krzysztof Piatek penalty and Sampdoria goalkeeper Emil Audero performed some crucial saves for a Genoa Derby point.
This was the first Derby della Lanterna since the tragic collapse of the Ponte Morandi on August 14, as the iconic bridge crumbled, taking 43 lives and leaving hundreds homeless. Miguel Veloso and Daniel Bessa took the midfield reins with Sandro not fully fit, while Samp opted for Jakub Jankto to replace suspended Karol Linetty.
It took just eight minutes to break the deadlock, as a corner was taken short and Gaston Ramirez whipped in a cross for Quagliarella’s diving header from six yards.
Krzysztof Piatek had not yet scored since Ivan Juric had taken over from Davide Ballardini, but he took advantage of an Anderson error and sprinted on to the ball, brought down by Emil Audero. Piatek kept his cool to convert the resulting penalty, sending Audero the wrong way for his 10th Serie A goal of the season, the first in six weeks.
Genoa suddenly took control of the momentum and Miguel Veloso’s free kick was just over, then Audero flew for an acrobatic save to turn Romulo’s strike out from under the crossbar.
Moments later, Audero used his face to parry a Piatek shot from point-blank range. The Sampdoria goalkeeper was called into action again on the hour mark with a sensational one-handed reaction save to slap Christian Kouame’s header off the line.
Tempers started to flare late on, with Juric sent off for dissent, at which point he turned to the officials and shouted: “You have no souls! This is a Derby!”
It was increasingly fiery and frantic as the game wore on, but neither side found the breakthrough.
