Ivan Perisic broke his goal drought, but Chievo again avoided defeat thanks to Sergio Pellissier in stoppages to stall Inter.
The Nerazzurri were under pressure to deliver after Champions League elimination and had Radja Nainggolan back from an injury lay-off, but Kwadwo Asamoah was suspended. Chievo didn’t have a single victory, but had drawn their last five and were still unbeaten under third Coach of the campaign Domenico Di Carlo. Ivan Radovanovic sat out a ban with Fabrizio Cacciatore and Manuel Pucciarelli struggling amid fitness issues.
Riccardo Meggiorini’s half-volley bounced in front of Samir Handanovic and forced a tricky save within the opening minute.
It took until the 28th for Inter to get a genuine shot on goal, as Danilo D’Ambrosio’s cross found Mauro Icardi for a first time strike from 12 yards, beaten away by Stefano Sorrentino, and Nainggolan blasted the rebound over the bar.
Matteo Politano had a few powerful attempts from distance flash just off target, but Perisic broke the deadlock just before half-time.
The Croatian had started the move with a dummy for Icardi, then D’Ambrosio rolled across from the left for Perisic to blast into the roof of the net from eight yards.
Joao Mario had two promising opportunities to make it 2-0 before the break, but his first touch was poor from an Icardi assist, then Perisic rolled across for him to come sliding in at the back post.
Icardi completed a give-and-go with Perisic to go clear on goal, but did not count on a spectacular Sorrentino reaction save at the near post.
However, Handanovic had to do even better with a desperate one-handed save to deny Pellissier the tap-in from point-blank range on an Emanuele Giaccherini assist. On the resulting corner, 39-year-old Pellissier’s acrobatic overhead kick whistled just wide.
Marcelo Brozovic ran a big risk on 74 minutes, as he was already on a yellow card when scything down Perparim Hetemaj.
It seemed to be over, but in stoppages a long ball was flicked on by Mariusz Stepinski and Pellissier reacted quicker than anyone else, drawing out Handanovic to lob the goalkeeper into an empty net. The 39-year-old showed once again he is the last to give in and still brings immense quality to the Chievo squad.
