SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 19 - 29 Dec 2018 (14.00 UK)
Genoa 0 - 0 Fiorentina
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Genoa and Fiorentina shared the spoils, but the Viola will feel unlucky after hitting the woodwork twice.

Both sides lost on Boxing Day and dropped down the standings, so wanted to end 2018 on a high. The Grifone had won only one of their previous 11 Serie A games and Cesare Prandelli had become their third Coach of the season, but Goran Pandev was ruled out by injury. The Viola had Vitor Hugo and Gerson suspended, so Federico Ceccherini stepped in to the defence.

Fiorentina had lost just one of their last 17 Serie A games against Genoa, winning eight of them.

Giovanni Simeone nodded inches wide in the opening minutes, with Ionit Radu needing two attempts to get Federico Chiesa’s strike under control.

Kevin Mirallas was unlucky to see his strike come off the upright from the edge of the box on a Simeone assist just before half-time, then Radu was again decisive on Edimilson Fernandes bursting down the right.

Alban Lafont got in on the act too with a fine save at full stretch to deny Daniel Bessa, but Chiesa also thumped the frame of the goal when meeting a Jordan Veretout cross at the back stick.

Radu was decisive once more on Chiesa’s daisy-cutter, but Fiorentina were furious on 69 minutes when their penalty appeals for a Miguel Veloso handling offence were waved away, even after being viewed on VAR. Stefano Pioli was so angry that he was sent off from the touchline.

Krzysztof Piatek was close to his 14th Serie A goal of the season, but the header was kept out by Lafont. Genoa had two big opportunities to win it in stoppages, but Piatek’s was deflected and from the corner Sandro volleyed wide.
