Daniel Ciofani gave Frosinone a shock victory away to Sampdoria that drags them closer to safety, as Fabio Quagliarella hit the upright.
Dennis Praet returned in midfield, but Junior Tavares got his first start, stepping in for suspended Nicola Murru. Manolo Gabbiadini and Riccardo Saponara were given the nod rather than Gregoire Defrel and Gaston Ramirez, with Gianluca Caprari injured. Frosinone were dealing with an injury crisis that ruled out Lorenzo Ariaudo, Federico Dionisi, Paolo Ghiglione, Lorenco Simic and Brighenti. Andrea Pinamonti was suffering from flu, so Daniel Ciofani partnered Camillo Ciano in attack.
It was an aggressive start from the Canarini, as Marco Capuano’s header from a corner skimmed the woodwork in the opening two minutes.
Samp had sterile possession, but Frosinone took the lead when Daniel Ciofani flicked in an Edoardo Goldaniga pull-back from the by-line almost with his back to goal from six yards.
Fabio Quagliarella thought he had equalised, but his volley at the back post was palmed on to the upright by Marco Sportiello.
Camillo Ciano’s lob landed on the roof of the net, although he was also marginally offside, and Raman Chibsah nodded just wide, while Quagliarella couldn’t surprise Sportiello with a header.
Marco Giampaolo threw on Gaston Ramirez and Gregoire Defrel, while Joachim Andersen’s header was smothered, then Sportiello flew for an excellent one-handed save on Omar Colley’s header.
Frosinone thought they had doubled their lead from a corner, but the offside flag was up as Marcello Trotta flicked it on for Chibsah at the back post.
Dennis Praet stung Sportiello’s gloves, but Samp were simply unable to break Frosinone down.
