Mattia Destro ended his year-long goal drought and Danilo hit the bar, but Lukas Lerager’s first strike in Serie A gave Genoa a precious point away to Bologna.
The hosts were revitalised under new Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, who beat Inter at San Siro on his debut. Federico Santander was not 100 per cent fit, so Mattia Destro got a rare start and was hoping for his first goal in almost a year, since the last time he faced Genoa here, in fact. Simone Edera made his debut after a move from Torino. Genoa had Cristian Romero suspended and lost Esteban Rolon in the warm-up.
Destro hadn’t scored a single goal since last facing Genoa here in February 2018, but he broke the deadlock and his year-long drought. Ionut Radu was slow getting out to Andrea Poli’s floated cross, so Destro timed the jump well and flicked a glancing header into the empty net.
Lukas Lerager fired over, but Tonny Sanabria forced two saves in 30 seconds, the first stinging Lukasz Skorupski’s gloves from a tight angle, then his header captured.
It was a warning, as January signing Lerager was allowed a free header on a corner to draw Genoa level soon after.
Davide Biraschi intercepted Erick Pulgar’s cross with Destro ready to nod in unmarked at the back post.
It was almost 2-1 to Bologna straight after the restart, as a corner was taken short for unmarked Edera, forcing Radu to parry with an outstretched foot.
Rodrigo Palacio was booked for a late tackle and will be suspended for the trip to Roma, while Lukasz Skorupski beat away an Ivan Radovanovic snapshot.
Genoa started to put the pressure on, as Skorupski fingertipped a Christian Kouame header out from under the bar and on the resulting corner Domenico Criscito’s ferocious volley skimmed the upright.
It remained open, as Soriano fired over from a Palacio knockdown, but Bologna had a period of intense activity on 87 minutes, as first Danilo’s towering header bounced off the crossbar, then moments later the defender was found unmarked at the back post for a volley that Radu acrobatically palmed away.
