Atalanta had the chance to climb the standings, but instead were pegged back by bottom club Chievo and an extraordinary Riccardo Meggiorini strike.
The Orobici had a big opportunity to get back into the European places, as they hosted bottom of the table Chievo with Roma, Fiorentina and Torino already losing this weekend. Rafael Toloi was the only absentee, but the Flying Donkeys missed Ezequiel Schelotto, Nicola Rigoni, Mattia Bani and Nenad Tomovic.
Chievo’s last win in Bergamo was back in February 2010, losing five of their last six meetings. Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was in the stands, as he sat out a touchline ban for dissent and a shove on a Sampdoria director last week.
Stefano Sorrentino was kept busy early doors with saves on Papu Gomez and Duvan Zapata, while the captain also drilled just wide from the edge of the box.
Chievo thought they had taken the lead on 21 minutes when Emanuele Giaccherini volleyed past Pierluigi Gollini, but he was flagged marginally offside on the Fabio Depaoli assist.
Atalanta resumed their siege, Sorrentino performing a spectacular save on Gomez from point-blank range on Zapata’s roll across.
Moments later, Chievo took the lead in Bergamo with an extraordinary goal. Gollini thought he’d done enough rushing out to get a touch on it and send Meggiorini wide, but the veteran forward managed to spin round and curl into the empty net from a tight angle without even looking at the goal.
Atalanta poured forward in the second half and eventually got back on level terms with a well-worked team goal. Duvan Zapata got the final through ball to release Ilicic, who beat Sorrentino with the most delicate of dinks.
They started to get into gear, Sorrentino fingertipping an Ilicic curler round the far post, but Andrea Masiello incredibly shinned over the bar from six yards undisturbed when he should’ve put his team in front.
Duvan Zapata’s header from a corner didn’t have enough power and Sorrentino rushed off his line to stall the Colombian on a Hans Hateboer through ball.
If anything, it was Chievo who were pushing throughout stoppages and more than deserved this point. Marco Andreolli was stretchered off after a clash of heads with Duvan Zapata.
