Bologna climbed out of the relegation zone with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chievo in Serie A on Monday.
Chievo were second best throughout as Bologna moved two points clear of Empoli, who lost to Udinese at the weekend.
The Rossoblu took just nine minutes to break the deadlock through Riccardo Orsolini, but the Juventus loanee was adjudged marginally offside by the VAR.
Rodrigo Palacio went on to waste a couple of gilt-edged chances, failing to beat Stefano Sorrentino one-on-one, before knocking a rebound wide from a yard out after the veteran goalkeeper spilled a shot.
Fortunately for Sinisa Mihajlovic, clumsy Chievo defender resulted in two penalties for Erick Pulgar, who converted both, sending Sorrentino the wrong way twice.
Mitchell Dijks was then on hand to rubberstamp the win, overlapping Nicola Sansone with a lung-bursting run down the left and beating Sorrentino at his near post.
The result leaves the Flying Donkeys - who had Mattia Bani sent off for two bookable offences - rooted to the bottom of the table, needing to recover 19 points from their seven remaining fixtures.
