Chievo are mathematically relegated to Serie B after Napoli forced Juventus to postpone the Scudetto party with Kalidou Koulibaly’s first career brace.

Something had to give in this game, as anything less than a win would see the hosts relegated, while failure to get the victory would result in Napoli handing Juventus the Scudetto six rounds early. It’s the Flying Donkeys who bow out after 11 consecutive Serie A campaigns, 17 of the last 18 in the top flight, but it was always going to be tough when starting with a three-point penalty for financial irregularities.

Carlo Ancelotti kept squad rotation to a minimum, despite being between the two legs of their Europa League quarter-final with Arsenal, having lost 2-0 in London on Thursday. Raul Albiol and Amadou Diawara were still unavailable, with Mattia Bani suspended for Chievo.

Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens had efforts off target, but on 15 minutes Mertens floated a corner to the near post, where Kalidou Koulibaly didn’t even have to jump in order to nod in from close range.

Vlad Chiriches should’ve made it 2-0, but somehow managed to turn a free header well wide from five yards. It seemed to bounce off his forehead and move sideways rather than forward.

Milik’s header from a tight angle landed on the roof of the net and David Ospina was comfortably behind a Riccardo Meggiorini effort.

Milik flicked wide from six yards after good work from Insigne down the left flank, but he did considerably better with a much tougher chance.

The Poland international gathered 20 metres out after Insigne and Piotr Zielinski combined, curling a left-foot special into the far bottom corner.

Jose Callejon’s ferocious volley was palmed out from under the bar by 40-year-old Stefano Sorrentino. However, Napoli did make it 3-0 late on with the first career brace for Koulibaly. A corner was only palmed into his path, where the defender hit a screamer on the half-volley into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Chievo said goodbye to Serie A in the best way, with a goal. Bostjan Cesar steered his header into the far post from 12 yards, sparking celebrations in the crowd with the final move of the game.
