Andrea Consigli was the hero for Sassuolo, as he saved Fabio Ceravolo’s penalty to ensure they held Parma to a draw.
This was an Emilia-Romagna Derby at the Mapei Stadium, following on from Parma’s win earlier in the season. Roberto Inglese, Francisco Sierralta, Bruno Alves and Alberto Grassi were still out of action, with Gervinho only fit for the bench, so it was again a revamped Ducali line-up. The Neroverdi opted for Alessandro Matri as the centre-forward.
Matri thought he had given Sassuolo the lead within three minutes with a tap-in from eight yards. However, after a lengthy VAR review, it was disallowed because Matri’s head was just offside as he redirected the wayward Ferrari effort.
Jeremie Boga twice stung the gloves of Luigi Sepe, then his right-foot curler from the edge of the box clipped the base of the far post with the goalkeeper nowhere near it.
VAR was called into action again, this time to award a penalty for Medhi Bourabia’s clumsy sliding tackle on Antonino Barillà. Fabio Ceravolo stepped up, but his spot-kick was parried by Andrea Consigli to keep the scoreline level.
Gervinho made his comeback from a muscular injury, but Sepe was again on his toes to parry the Federico Peluso header from point-blank range.
The Parma goalkeeper also did well to flap away a Bourabia cross-shot and readjust to keep out Berardi’s follow-up. Sepe was beaten by a Gian Marco Ferrari header from Berardi’s free kick, but saw it skim the upright.
