Serie A Week 33 - 20 Apr 2019 (14.00 UK)
Bologna 3 - 0 Sampdoria
Tonelli og 54 (B), Pulgar 69 (B), Orsolini 83 (B)
Stadio Renato Dall’Ara

Bologna broke away from the relegation zone with a thumping 3-0 victory over Europe-chasing Sampdoria, but Emil Audero had a nightmare.

Sinisa Mihajlovic had revitalised the Felsinei since replacing Pippo Inzaghi on the bench and they went in seeking a fourth consecutive home victory, even though Federico Santander and Mitchell Dijks were suspended. Manolo Gabbiadini was banned and therefore missed the visit to his old club, so Gregoire Defrel supported Capocannoniere Fabio Quagliarella as Samp pushed for a Europa League spot.

Sampdoria had failed to win their last nine Serie A trips to the Stadio Dall’Ara, drawing five of them.

Quagliarella’s free kick skimmed the near post in the opening stages, but Bologna wasted a great chance when Emil Audero only parried a Riccardo Orsolini snapshot and Roberto Soriano blasted wide on the follow-up from close range.

Bologna thought they had taken the lead with a scorcher of a chest and volley by Blerim Dzemaili into the top corner from 25 metres out. It was a spectacular finish, but VAR disallowed it because Ladislav Krejci’s cross had already gone out of play much earlier in the move.

Audero had to be at full stretch to fingertip a swerving Orsolini cross-shot off target, while after the restart Lukasz Skorupski was alert to smother Quagliarella’s right-foot strike.

Bologna finally did take the lead in chaotic fashion. Audero fingertipped Erick Pulgar’s free kick on to the crossbar and then seemed to not quite know where it was going to land as the ball came back down, so he allowed it to ricochet in off Lorenzo Tonelli’s shin from a couple of yards.

Audero wasn’t exactly impeccable on the second Bologna goal either, as he flapped wildly and allowed Pulgar to curl his free kick into the far top corner from a tight angle, as it was practically a short corner.

Samp fought back, but Ibrahima Mbaye flung himself in the way of an Albin Ekdal strike from 10 yards. There was yet another horrible Audero error on the third Bologna goal. It was an acrobatic Orsolini scissor-kick volley when unmarked on a Ladislav Krejci cross, but the finish squirmed through the goalkeeper’s gloves.
