SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 33 - 20 Apr 2019 (14.00 UK)
Genoa 0 - 1 Torino
Ansaldi 58 (T)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Cristian Ansaldi blasted in the winner against his former club, as Torino closed within three points of fourth and sent Genoa into more trouble.

The Grifone lost 2-1 in Turin and had not suffered home and away defeats to Torino in the same Serie A season since 1981-82.

The gap between Genoa and the relegation zone had closed to just five points going into the Easter weekend, nowhere near enough to feel comfortable. To make things worse, they had Goran Pandev and Davide Biraschi suspended, so Antonio Sanabria and Gianluca Lapadula both returned from the back shelf of Cesare Prandelli’s plans. Simone Zaza began his two-match ban, with Iago Falque and Koffi Djidji injured, but Andrea Belotti returned from suspension to lead the Torino attack in their push for a Europa League spot. The Granata had drawn eight of their last 10 Serie A away fixtures, losing only once.

Ervin Zukanovic’s diving header on a Stefano Sturaro free kick was off target, but Sturaro then collided with Nicolas Nkoulou as he tried to take a shot and hurt his ankle. The midfielder was stretchered off to make way for Esteban Rolon.

Salvatore Sirigu needed a great reaction save on Lukas Lerager’s header from close range on a taut Domenico Criscito cross.

Toro started to pile on the pressure and after Daniele Baselli’s free kick whistled just wide, they took the lead. Ola Aina burst forward, combined with Alex Berenguer and Cristian Ansaldi smashed home from 10 yards. The former Genoa defender refused to celebrate and waved an apology to his old fans.

Salvatore Sirigu was decisive in the final stages, with an extraordinary one-handed save getting his fingertips to the Christian Kouame header.

Deep into stoppages, Ionut Radu prevented the second Toro goal, one-on-one with Vittorio Parigini after the Andrea Belotti counter.

With Milan drawing away to Parma and Lazio losing to Chievo, this win allows Torino to surge up the standings and move within three points of those Champions League places. Above all, it's Torino v Milan next Sunday.
