SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 38 - 26 May 2019 (19.30 UK)
Fiorentina 0 - 0 Genoa
Stadio Artemio Franchi

Fiorentina and Genoa played out a dour 0-0 draw, but were rescued by other results going their way, as Empoli are relegated.

The Viola knew that defeat here would put them at potential risk of relegation, but Genoa needed a victory or at least a better result than Empoli would earn away to Inter, as the Grifone were in the bottom three going into this final game.

German Pezzella returned from injury for a fractured nose, but Giovanni Simeone and Kevin Mirallas were dropped for a 3-5-2 formation. Genoa missed Darko Lazovic, Lukas Lerager, Andrea Favilli, Oscar Hiljemark, Stefano Sturaro and suspended Giuseppe Pezzella.

Luis Muriel managed a sensational volley from a tricky angle, but it was smothered at the near post in the opening minute.

It was to be one of the only real highlights in a game dominated by fear and the focus on what Empoli were doing at San Siro.

Muriel pounced on a loose ball for the deflected finish over the bar, but even when news came through that Empoli had equalised and Genoa would be in Serie B, it still didn’t change the atmosphere.

If anything, Federico Chiesa had the best chance to win it, his shot on the turn from a Muriel assist forcing a tough save out of Ionut Radu.
