Genoa 2 - 1 Fiorentina
C Zapata 11 (G), Kouame 65 (G), Pulgar pen 76 (F)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Genoa made the most of poor Fiorentina defending and relied on the woodwork in stoppages, as the Viola suffered another defeat.

Entertainment seemed to be guaranteed going into Marassi, because in the opening round the Grifone held Roma 3-3 and the Viola lost 4-3 to Napoli. Marko Pajac and Agudelo returned from suspension, but Francesco Cassata, Riccardo Saponara and Stefano Sturaro were still sidelined. Henrique Dalbert was on the bench with Franck Ribery after the transfer from Inter, but Kevin-Prince Boateng replaced Dusan Vlahovic at centre-forward with Ranieri coming in at left-back.

Fiorentina started brightly, Federico Chiesa controlling a long German Pezzella ball only to flash his finish across the face of goal, but Genoa proved very dangerous on set plays.

The first Lasse Schone corner found Cristian Romero to soar above the crowd and his header bounced off the far post. On the second corner taken short and Paolo Ghiglione crossed to the back post, Cristian Zapata was allowed practically a free header and it squirmed in.

Genoa remained dangerous on set plays, as Ivan Radovanovic tested the goalkeeper and Andrea Pinamonti forced a sensational Bartlomiej Dragowski save from point-blank range on an Antonio Barreca cross.

Christian Kouame missed a sitter, his free header somehow wide on Pinamonti’s cross from the right. Lukas Lerager also failed to find the net from a Ghiglione cross and forced a desperate Dragowski save.

Fiorentina were all at sea in the second half and Genoa took advantage, as Kouame was allowed a clear run at goal to double their lead on a kick from Ionut Radu.

The Viola rode their luck with Ivan Radovanovic’s header thumping the bar and got back into the game, as Dusan Vlahovic came off the bench for his header on Erick Pulgar’s free kick to whistle just wide.

Moments later, Romulo brought down substitute Dalbert, on his debut after the move from Inter, and Pulgar kept his cool to convert the penalty.

Franck Ribery tried to get Fiorentina back on level terms, his trademark cut inside and angled drive smothered at the near post.

Chiesa was so unlucky in the final minutes, as his solo effort from distance bounced off the upright and back out.
