Cagliari left it late to claim their first Serie A home win of the season on Friday, beating Genoa 3-1 with a three-minute salvo.
Genoa started with Andrea Favilli over Andrea Pinamonti in attack against a Radja Nainggolan-less Cagliari.
The match saw Giovanni Simeone face his former side, while Grifone wingback Marko Pajac was taking on his parent club.
The first half did not kick into life until the 30-minute mark, when Simeone sent a diving header wide from a couple of yards out.
Moments later, at the other end, Robin Olsen pushed away Christian Kouame’s towering header from point-blank range.
Just before the break, Lasse Schone was found totally unmarked by Peter Ankersen’s low cross, but he fired over from close range.
Barely a minute into the second half and Simeone made it two in two, glancing a header past Ionut Radu to give Cagliari the lead.
Genoa thought they had a way back into the game from the penalty spot when Fabrizio Cacciatore blocked Pajac’s cross with his arm, but the VAR intervened and deemed the offence to be outside the box.
Despite that, they looked to have nicked a point as Kouame struck home from a tight angle after a delightful flick from substitute Antonio Sanabria.
However, Cristian Zapata knocked a cross into his own net only a matter of seconds later to restore the hosts’ advantage.
Three minutes later, the victory was secured by Joao Pedro, who was away in the clear with Ionita but opted to round Ionut Radu and rifle into an empty net.
