Only the heroics of Gabriel kept the scoreline relatively low at 3-1, because Atalanta laid siege to Lecce for 90 minutes.
The Orobici finally played their first game of the season in Bergamo, as the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia has undergone restructuring work to become the Gewiss Stadium. Until now, their home matches had been played at Parma’s Stadio Tardini, but the Champions League home ties will continue to be at San Siro in Milan.
Duvan Zapata turned a free header over from six yards in the opening minute, then Josip Ilicic was sent clear by an inspired Papu Gomez slide-rule pass, but the shot across the face of goal was palmed away by Gabriel.
Gomez went for goal himself, dribbling past three to test Gabriel at the near post from the tightest of angles, while Ilicic had another attempt off target.
Duvan Zapata eventually broke through with a wonderful solo effort, as he caught Lecce defenders in possession down the left and smashed a strike across the goalkeeper into the far side-netting.
Lecce fought back with Filippo Falco’s control and volley from close range stinging the gloves of Pierluigi Gollini.
However, Papu Gomez ran on to a Duvan Zapata lay-off and placed his angled drive into the far bottom corner across Gabriel for 2-0.
Atalanta had 14 shots in that first half and continued in a similar vein after the break, Duvan Zapata hitting the side-netting and Gomez curled a solo effort over the bar.
The third goal did arrive from Robin Gosens, who surged forward and combined with Ilicic to drill right-footed into the far bottom corner from just inside the penalty area.
It was a continual siege on the Lecce goal, as Gomez had several opportunities go close and Ilicic fired over from a tight angle.
Ilicic was persistent, but unlucky, as when he did finally manage to squirm his finish under the goalkeeper, Lucioni got back for a goal-line clearance.
Gabriel continued with his heroics after Papu Gomez slalomed through the entire defence, then again on substitute Luis Muriel and acrobatically palming a Gosens looping header over from Gomez’s assist.
Despite everything, Lecce did manage to get a goal back, as Falco’s free kick to the back post found Fabio Lucioni’s towering header.
There was still time for yet another Gabriel save on Muriel to keep the scoreline surprisingly decent.
