Serie A Week 7 - 6 Oct 2019 (17.00 UK)
Torino 0 - 0 Napoli
Stadio Grande Torino

Napoli wasted another golden opportunity to close on the leading pack with a disappointing 0-0 draw away to Torino.

Kalidou Koulibaly was suspended, with Nikola Maksimovic and Mario Rui injured, so Elseid Hysaj and Sebastiano Luperto had rare starts. Jose Callejon was rested for a return to the 4-3-3 with Chucky Lozano, Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens. Toro had Gleison Bremer on a ban, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Simone Zaza side-lined, so Simone Verdi faced his former club.

In the opening four minutes, Lyanco scrambled to clear when Lozano was about to pounce on a poor Cristian Ansaldi back-pass.

Fabian Ruiz stung Salvatore Sirigu’s gloves from distance and Lyanco was again decisive with a block on Insigne’s counter, but at the other end Verdi hit the side-netting after Tomas Rincon had dispossessed Piotr Zielinski.

Sirigu remained alert on Zielinski and as Fabian Ruiz only grazed an Insigne cross with his shin right in front of the goalkeeper.

Mertens famously scored a wild lob against Torino a couple of seasons ago and almost replicated it here, except it went just over the bar.

Lozano hesitated when sent clear by an inspired Mertens through ball, but Napoli were forced into an early substitution when Hysaj fell very badly on to his neck after an awkward collision with Ansaldi. The Toro winger did all he could to try to catch him mid-air and cushion the blow, but the Albanian fell very heavily nonetheless and was stretchered off.

On the stroke of half-time, a corner came out to Ansaldi for a dangerous half-volley that bounced awkwardly, but Alex Meret did well to palm it away.

Tomas Rincon tested Meret with a header after the restart, while Andrea Belotti only fired in the angled drive after he was caught clearly offside.

Armando Izzo had timid penalty appeals, but he had run into the back of Faouzi Ghoulam. Belotti’s trademark overhead kick flashed just past the far post, but substitute Fernando Llorente should’ve done much better when turning a free header over from six yards on Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s cross.

Ansaldi saw his shot deflected wide off the back of Fabian’s arm, but his hands were behind his back, so it could not be considered handball. Izzo’s header was over from a corner and Llorente only glanced a Jose Callejon cross.
