Another diving Gaetano Castrovilli header earned Fiorentina a point, cancelling out Gervinho’s counter-attack in a 1-1 with Parma.
Franck Ribery and captain German Pezzella were both suspended, with Martin Caceres injured, so Rachid Ghezzal and Kevin-Prince Boateng partnered Federico Chiesa upfront. Lorenzo Venuti and Luca Ranieri were young additions to the defence. Parma’s injury crisis dragged on, with Roberto Inglese, Bruno Alves, Alberto Grassi and Vincent Laurini out of action, Andreas Cornelius only fit for the bench.
The Ducali threatened twice early on the counter, with Hernani firing over at the back post and Gervinho’s touch a little heavy, allowing Bartlomiej Dragowski to smother.
Venuti did very well to not only keep up with Gervinho while sprinting, but also make the clean sliding tackle at the end of it.
Fiorentina kept sterile possession, but with no pace in their passing, were predictable and unable to break down a defensive Parma.
Inevitably, it was Parma who took the lead instead. Chiesa was dispossessed in midfield and Gervinho was sent clear on the counter from the centre-circle, keeping his cool to dink it over the on-rushing Dragowski.
The Viola created their first real chance moments later, Luca Ranieri sprinting down the left to float in a cross that Boateng nodded over.
Boateng was again involved after the break, Chiesa’s cross knocked down for the Ghanaian’s half-volley to skim the far upright.
Gervinho again got away from Nikola Milenkovic to test Dragowski at the near post, but Fiorentina finally got an equaliser with their breakout star of the season.
Castrovilli has been a revelation and just days after a similar goal against Sassuolo, he again got an acrobatic diving header into the far corner from 12 yards, this time on a Dalbert cross from the left.
Suddenly, it was a different game and Dusan Vlahovic had two promising opportunities, one saved by Luigi Sepe and the other fired over as he came sliding in.
Brazilian striker Pedro made his Serie A debut in the final minutes, but there was no winner.
