Napoli were jeered off the pitch after another very disappointing result, held 0-0 at home by Genoa, with Eljif Elmas and Andrea Pinamonti creating the best chances.
There was extreme tension and a very small crowd – circa 20,000 – at the San Paolo after a chaotic few days. The squad rebelled against club orders and refused to go back into a training retreat on Tuesday night, prompting Napoli to threaten legal action as punishment. Fans turned on the team, blaming them for walking out. Allan, Kostas Manolas, Faouzi Ghoulam and Kevin Malcuit were injured, with Mario Rui not fully fit. Arkadiusz Milik had been expected to start, but he pulled out of the squad with an injury just hours before kick-off.
Genoa were having mixed results under new coach Thiago Motta, but made the trip without Domenico Criscito, Christian Kouame, Andrea Favilli, Stefano Sturaro and Riccardo Saponara.
Insigne thought he’d scored after 90 seconds when Dries Mertens threaded through for Hirving Lozano, then the captain fired the rebound into the roof of the net, but the Mexican had already wandered offside.
Piotr Zielinski’s missile from distance stung Ionut Radu’s gloves, while Mertens pulled back from the by-line for Lozano, but Cristian Romero made a decisive interception.
Goran Pandev horribly mis-kicked after good work to set him up by Kevin Agudelo, while Jose Callejon couldn’t get a clean finish on Insigne’s slide-rule pass thanks to a risky Marko Pajac tackle.
Genoa constantly got down the right with Peter Ankersen, as Napoli simply weren’t defending that area, but didn’t make the most of the spaces.
Straight after the restart, Agudelo and Andrea Pinamonti combined to set up Pandev for a left-foot curler just wide of the far top corner.
Ionut Radu got down to beat away a Mertens snapshot, while Elseid Hysaj made a decisive block as Pinamonti tried to turn in from six yards.
There was a huge Genoa opportunity on 61 minutes, as Agudelo got away down the left and floated a ball from the by-line for Pinamonti, who seemed certain to score from six yards until a decisive Kalidou Koulibaly goal-line clearance.
Radu got down quickly to parry a Fabian Ruiz daisy-cutter, while Marko Pajac blasted wide after a well-worked team move from right to left.
Eljif Elmas thought he’s scored on 86 minutes with a free header on Lozano’s cross, but Radu somehow showed cat-like reflexes to claw it away at the base of the near post with 80 per cent of the ball already over the line.
