SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 12 - 10 Nov 2019 (17.00 UK)
Parma 2 - 0 Roma
Sprocati 68 (P), Cornelius 93 (P)
Stadio Ennio Tardini

Mattia Sprocati and Andreas Cornelius goals gave Parma a surprise victory over Roma, who slide out of the top four.

The Giallorossi knew they needed a victory to retain third place, as Lazio and Cagliari had won earlier in the day. Mert Cetin was suspended, with Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nikola Kalinic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Davide Zappacosta and Bryan Cristante injured. Parma lost Yann Karamoh, Roberto Inglese and Alberto Grassi, with Bruno Alves and Vincent Laurini only fit for the bench, but Andreas Cornelius returned to the starting XI.

A short corner found Gervinho unmarked on the edge of the box only to blaze over, then Pau Lopez got down to palm a deflected Cornelius strike round the post.

Leonardo Spinazzola had just returned from a muscular problem when he limped off again, making way for Davide Santon.

Both Cornelius and birthday boy Aleksandar Kolarov scuffed from very promising positions, while Pau Lopez needed two attempts to control a Riccardo Gagliolo strike.

Justin Kluivert’s finish was too central to really trouble Luigi Sepe, but Parma lost Gervinho to injury on the stroke of half-time.

Kolarov almost scored on his birthday, as the free kick curled over the wall to bounce off the woodwork, but when Javier Pastore went to volley in the rebound, Sepe somehow parried from point-blank range.

It turned into end-to-end frantic runs and Parma finally took the lead. Gagliolo pulled it across from the left, Mattia Sprocati had enough time and space in the box to control, turn and hit the half-volley into the ground, which bounced beyond Pau Lopez into the far corner.

The Ducali were fired up and wanted a second, as Pau Lopez got down well to palm a Cornelius strike away with one hand, then Kulusevski’s strike skimmed the woodwork.

Kulusevski snatched the ball from Jordan Veretout and rolled a magnificent ball across for Cornelius, but he drilled wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Roma fought back, Zaniolo’s sudden snapshot testing Sepe and the goalkeeper flying to push a Cengiz Under strike out from under the bar.

However, Kulusevski was unplayable down the Parma left and Kluivert risked an own goal to intercept his pass, preventing a certain Cornelius tap-in.

Kulusevski went on the counter and his ferocious, swerving right-foot finish was only kept out by an even better Pau Lopez flying save.

Parma did add a second with the last kick of the game, as Hernani intercepted a midfield pass and sent Cornelius forward, where he smashed it low past Pau Lopez.
