Lecce wasted several huge opportunities, hit the woodwork twice and were denied by Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno in a goalless draw.
The Sardinians welcomed back Andrea Carboni from suspension, but Lorenzo Pellegrini, Christian Oliva and Leonardo Pavoletti were still out of action. Lecce finally ended their run of six straight defeats with a shock comeback to beat Lazio, taking them out of the drop zone. Luca Rossettini, Biagio Meccariello and Gianluca Lapadula missed the trip, with Riccardo Saponara passing a late fitness test.
It was an aggressive Cagliari start, Marco Mancosu flinging himself in the path of a Radja Nainggolan strike in the opening couple of minutes. They were dominant from the get-go, Joao Pedro’s overhead kick failing to fully connect, then Giovanni Simeone firing wide from a promising position.
Lecce really should’ve taken the lead when Riccardo Saponara’s ferocious strike was only parried into the path of Khouma Babacar, who hit the rebound on to the upright from a couple of yards.
Cagliari lost Nainggolan, who had been in doubt before kick-off due to a calf issue, and he made way for Daniele Ragatzu midway through the first half. Lecce also had to replace Filippo Falco and Marco Calderoni with injuries before half-time.
Saponara was firing on all cylinders, though, as he ran on to a through ball and Ragnar Klavan did just enough to put him off, the angled drive skimming the far post.
Saponara had the ball in the net on 55 minutes, but he was offside when the initial effort was deflected by a sea of legs into his path.
Lecce missed another astonishing opportunity from a chaotic move, as Alessio Cragno did well to parry the Babacar shot into the path of Mancosu, who somehow prodded it on to the upright from a yard.
Diego Farias also drilled just past the far post, but Cagliari also wasted a golden opportunity when Nahitan Nandez ballooned over from 12 yards on the poor Fabio Lucioni clearance.
In the final minutes, Farias thought he’d scored with a powerful finish from the edge of the area, but Cragno flew for a sensational save to push it round the far post.
Cagliari went close too, Simeone scuffing wide when sent clear by Ragatzu.
