Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw his penalty saved, but still got on the scoresheet along with Samu Castillejo and a Ragnar Klavan own goal, as Milan conclude the season with a comfortable victory.
The season came to a close with the Rossoneri knowing they had sixth place, unable to catch Roma in fifth, so will start the Europa League from the preliminary rounds in mid-September. Ante Rebic was suspended, with Alessio Romagnoli, Andrea Conti, Rade Krunic and Mateo Musacchio injured, so Samu Castillejo and Rafael Leao stepped in. Cagliari had Marko Rog banned, Radja Nainggolan, Joao Pedro, Daniele Ragatzu, Luca Pellegrini and Christian Oliva on the treatment table.
Milan took the lead with a stroke of good fortune, as Rafael Leao tried to score from an impossible angle, it rolled all the way across the face of goal, bounced off the far post and ricocheted in off the helpless Ragnar Klavan.
Alessio Cragno performed a desperate reaction save from close range on Ibrahimovic’s volley, then was beaten by a spectacular Leao overhead kick, but was saved by the crossbar.
Leao was running riot, but then pulled up clutching the top of his thigh and limped off.
Simon Kjaer had to make a strange goal-line clearance almost with his heel on Artur Ionita’s effort, which had surprised Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Ibrahimovic jumped between two defenders and Walukiewicz was judged to have handled the ball for a penalty. Zlatan stepped up to take it himself, but Alessio Cragno is a specialist and he managed to save the spot-kick.
Zlatan did get his goal eventually, hitting an absolute missile into the far top corner from the Castillejo assist.
Castillejo added a goal of his own moments later, as Ibrahimovic stole the ball off Klavan – who was having something of a nightmare at San Siro – and Giacomo Bonaventura pulled it back for a smart Castillejo turn and finish.
Donnarumma kept the clean sheet intact with a spectacular save in stoppages to claw the Paolo Faragò header out of the net.
