SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 1 - 19 Sep 2020 (17.00 UK)
Fiorentina 1 - 0 Torino
Castrovilli 78 (F)
Stadio Artemio Franchi

Gaetano Castrovilli scored the first goal of the 2020-21 Serie A season to give Fiorentina a 1-0 victory over Torino, meeting Federico Chiesa’s cross.

Sofyan Amrabat was suspended and Erick Pulgar injured, so Giacomo Bonaventura made his competitive Viola debut. Toro started new buy Karol Linetty, but Ricardo Rodriguez, Daniele Baselli and Lyanco were not fully fit for Marco Giampaolo’s new 4-3-1-2 formation.

Christian Kouame’s header glanced wide, but Alex Berenguer forced a save from Bartlomiej Dragowski after a delightful Linetty dinked pass over the defence for his chest and volley.

Salvatore Sirigu needed an even better save just before half-time, as he palmed a downward Kouame header off the line and had to be alert on the accidental ricochet from point-blank range off teammate Cristian Ansaldi too.

Sirigu out-did himself moments later by acrobatically clawing Kouame’s header off the line with cat-like reflexes.

Cristiano Biraghi had the ball in the net within seconds of the restart, but was flagged offside after drilling past Sirigu from a tight angle at the back post, as Chiesa’s cross took a touch off Castrovilli.

Simone Zaza horribly wasted a gift from Ribery, rolling it in front of Belotti when he would’ve gone clear on goal with the right pass.

Bonaventura and Chiesa failed to make the most of promising opportunities, but Fiorentina finally got the breakthrough.

Chiesa skipped past Ansaldi down the right and put a wonderful low cross on to the boot of unmarked Castrovilli for the tap-in at the back post. It was the first goal of the Serie A season and Castrovilli’s first since taking the Number 10 jersey.

Patrick Cutrone came off the bench and misfired two chances, the second still demanding a full stretch fingertip save from Sirigu. Borja Valero was also a late substitute, making his comeback for Fiorentina after three years at Inter.

There was a 95th-minute scare, as Belotti's acrobatic scissor-kick volley was in the back of the net, but flagged offside.
