This was the Aquile’s first match of the season, as their Week 1 fixture with Atalanta was rescheduled to September 30 due to La Dea’s Champions League quarter-final efforts. Senad Lulic, Luiz Felipe, Denis Vavro and Vedat Muriqi were unavailable, so there were no new faces in Simone Inzaghi’s XI. Cagliari had ex-Inter defender Diego Godin on the bench just hours after his arrival.

It took all of four minutes to break the deadlock, as Adam Marusic got away down the left and rolled it across the face of goal for Manuel Lazzari to tap in undisturbed. It was Lazzari’s first Serie A goal since March 2018 for SPAL.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header from a corner struck Marko Rog in the six-yard box, while Charalampos Lykogiannis fired a free kick over from a tricky angle and Rog’s strike tested Thomas Strakosha.

Lazio somehow failed to convert four chances in one move, although the offside flag had gone up during the melee. Milinkovic-Savic and Lazzari failed to beat Alessio Cragno, then Tucu Correa nodded on to the upright and Immobile fired over from six yards.

The Aquile repeatedly got away on the counter, but kept choosing the wrong final ball, then Cragno got down quickly for a low save on Immobile’s angled drive.

Joao Pedro curled a free kick just over the far top corner and after the restart his shot was only parried by Strakosha into the path of Giovanni Simeone, who somehow fired the rebound over an open goal.

Gonzalo Escalante made his Lazio debut and Cragno fingertipped a Milinkovic-Savic curler round the post, but it was mostly Cagliari in the second half and Walukiewicz prodded wide from a free kick at the far post.

However, they failed to make their chances count and Immobile instead doubled Lazio’s lead. It was another Marusic assist, as he gathered from the centre-circle, sprinted down the left and pulled it back for the European Golden Shoe winner to finish it off.
