Both teams were stuttering, dealing with injuries and rumours of management changes hovering over them. Davide Santon, Javier Pastore, Amadou Diawara, Nicolò Zaniolo and Riccardo Calafiori missed out for the hosts, while German Pezzella and Borja Valero weren’t fully fit, so Lucas Martinez Quarta got his first start, creating a new strike partnership of Franck Ribery and Jose Callejon.

It was a fiery start for Fiorentina, as in the opening few minutes Gaetano Castrovilli drilled wide and then flashed a ball across the face of goal, forcing Leonardo Spinazzola into a desperate clearance.

Despite the early Viola dominance, Roma scored with their first attempt. A long Antonio Mirante ball went over Edin Dzeko, Leonardo Spinazzola’s run took a lucky deflection off Martin Caceres and he turned in the loose ball.

Spinazzola almost created another moments later, his ball across from the left for Dzeko to come sliding in, but Pol Lirola made a decisive interception from six yards.

Pedro Rodriguez curled inches past the far post on the counter, then Bartlomiej Dragowski palmed a Dzeko free header away with his trailing hand.

Dragowski needed a sensational double save to deny first Rick Karsdorp on a corner and then scramble across to reach the Henrikh Mkhitaryan follow-up.

Veretout’s angled drive skimmed the far post and Chris Smalling showed brave defending to deflect a Martinez Quarta effort wide with his face, with Dusan Vlahovic’s effort charged down too.

Mkhitaryan went on a strong solo run, deflected on to the side-netting by Nikola Milenkovic, and he provided the assist for Roma’s second goal.

Dzeko spread the play down the right, where Mkhitaryan immediately rolled across the face of goal for Pedro to tap in at the far post.

Fiorentina ended the match with 10 men, as Argentina international Lucas Martinez Quarta was shown a straight red card for his lunge on Dzeko in midfield.
