Fiorentina ended their dismal streak with a point, as Dusan Vlahovic’s penalty cancelled out the Hamed Junior Traore opener, and both sides hit the woodwork.
The Viola were forced to reckon with their status as relegation candidates after two points and one goal in the last six rounds. The Neroverdi were still flying high in joint second place and had Francesco Caputo back on the bench after over a month out, but Lukas Haraslin was suspended.
Cristiano Biraghi made a last-minute recovery from injury to start and wasted a glorious chance in the opening minutes, firing wide when found unmarked by Franck Ribery’s pull-back.
However, Sassuolo took the lead when Domenico Berardi’s through ball released Junior Hamed Traore to go clear on goal, surprising Nikola Milenkovic.
Manuel Locatelli was distraught at receiving a yellow card, because it means he’ll be suspended against his old club Milan.
Sassuolo had a double chance with Bartlomiej Dragowski beating away the Rogerio strike and Berardi turning the rebound over.
It was a bad day for Locatelli, who also gave away a penalty for his trip on Ribery and Dusan Vlahovic converted the spot-kick.
Pedro Obiang could not have come closer for Sassuolo, as his right-foot strike bounced off the top of the crossbar from a Berardi assist. Andrea Consigli was then alert to deny Gaetano Castrovilli, sent through by Ribery.
Ribery almost won it for the Viola on 83 minutes, managing to turn on a sixpence to get past two defenders and blast it onto the underside of the bar, but the ricochet went back out.
