Milan again were forced to fight back for a 2-2 draw against relegation candidates Genoa, as Pierre Kalulu cancelled out the Mattia Destro double.
The Rossoneri scraped a 2-2 draw with Parma on Sunday, which cut their lead at the top of the table to three points, but maintained their unbeaten Serie A run since March, while Genoa were only beaten by a pair of late Cristiano Ronaldo penalties.
Injuries piled up for both teams, with the visitors missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Simon Kjaer, Matteo Gabbia and Ismael Bennacer, with Theo Hernandez rested, so Pierre Kalulu got his first Serie A start. The Grifone were without Cristian Zapata, Federico Marchetti, Davide Zappacosta, Filippo Melegoni, Francesco Cassata, Domenico Criscito, Davide Biraschi and Vittorio Parigini, while Milan Badelj and Goran Pandev were not at 100 per cent either.
Mattia Perin was alert to pluck Hakan Calhanoglu’s free kick out of the top corner, then Mattia Destro drilled wide when one-on-one with Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Moments later, Ante Rebic rode two tackles to run into the area and force a save from Perin.
However, Genoa went in front straight after the restart, as Donnarumma managed a fantastic one-handed reaction save from Shomurodov on the turn, but could do nothing on Destro’s follow-up.
It didn’t last long, because Davide Calabria got the equaliser with a sudden daisy-cutter from well outside the area into the far bottom corner.
Destro has barely scored in Serie A over the last few years, but completed a brace against his old club. Paolo Ghiglione whipped in a cross from the right and his header into the ground bounced over Donnarumma at the back post.
Milan poured forward with everything they had and after several attempts were charged down or deflected, they got the equaliser from a corner. Alessio Romagnoli knocked down the set play for teenager Pierre Kalulu to react quickly, prodding in from six yards on his first Serie A start.
The Rossoneri continued to push for a winner, yet Donnarumma had to make another sensational save on Gianluca Scamacca's overhead kick. Milan were again held to a 2-2 draw by a relegation candidate after the same result with Parma and Inter closed the gap to just one point.
