The Friulani were on sparkling form going into this midweek round with three consecutive victories. However, Stefano Okaka, Bram Nuytinck, Mato Jajalo, Fernando Forestieri and Sebastien De Maio were out of action, although Tolgay Arslan returned from his ban. Crotone were fresh from their first win of the season, but Luca Cigarini and Ahmed Benali were out of action, along with suspended Lisandro Magallan.

Junior Messias forced Juan Musso to palm away a curling free kick from the near top corner and Ignacio Pussetto had the ball in the net on 21 minutes, but only after he’d wandered offside on a floated Rodrigo De Paul pass.

De Paul then went on the counter from the edge of his own penalty area to set up Ilija Nestorovski, firing straight at Alex Cordaz.

There were concerns on the stroke of half-time when De Paul had a problem on the inside of his knee and although he continued after treatment, he was clearly not running well even after the break.

Udinese were nonetheless aggressive still, Nestorovski testing Cordaz on the half-volley and Arslan blasting just wide from distance.

Nahuel Molina fired another powerful but central effort straight at the Crotone goalkeeper, then he really should’ve done better moments later with a weak finish off the outside of the boot from 10 yards.

Udinese had the ball in the net again on 68 minutes and for the second time it was ruled out due to an offside position.

Roberto Pereyra had penalty appeals, and although Golemic did give him a small shove, the way he flung himself to the ground didn’t help his cause.

De Paul’s knee injury was evidently on his mind when wasting a huge chance for Udinese on 75 minutes. Gerard Deulofeu burst into the box and rolled across for De Paul, but rather than shoot one-on-one from 12 yards, he just laid it off for Pussetto, and by that point Cordaz and the Crotone defence had recovered their position to parry.

Not to be outdone, Crotone also horribly wasted a promising counter when Pedro Pereira stopped and passed it back rather than go clear on goal.

As time wore on, only Udinese were even trying to win the game, but couldn’t find a way through.
