Bologna had more of the ball at Marassi, but Genoa were decidedly more clinical, making the most of defensive errors with Miha Zajc and Mattia Destro.
Both sides had numerous injury problems going into the game, with Davide Ballardini’s team still trying to break away from the drop zone. Genoa missed Davide Biraschi, Goran Pandev, Cristian Zapata, Luca Pellegrini, Francesco Cassata and suspended Edoardo Goldaniga. Bologna had Matias Svanberg banned, with Lorenzo De Silvestri, Gary Medel, Federico Santander, Lukasz Skorupski, Nicola Ravaglia, Ibrahima Mbaye and Nicola Sansone sidelined.
Mattia Destro tested Angelo Da Costa within 30 seconds with a flick on the half-volley, then Domenico Criscito stung the goalkeeper’s gloves on the counter, but Bologna kept almost all the possession early doors.
Riccardo Orsolini unleashed a rocket on the half-volley from distance that Mattia Perin flew to fingertip over the bar, while Eldor Shomurodov wasn’t alert enough to make the most of the Destro roll across.
The deadlock was broken on the verge of half-time when Shomurodov broke away down the right and pulled it back across for Davide Zappacosta, forcing a great save from Da Costa, but Miha Zajc was quickest to react on the rebound.
Rodrigo Palacio turned an ambitious effort over from distance, but Bologna shot themselves in the foot with a howler. Jerdy Schouten hesitated just outside his own penalty area, couldn’t deal with the pressure from debutant youth team player Steeve Eboa Ebongue and it was child’s play for Destro to score when one-on-one.
Bologna continued to keep more of the ball and do very little with it, Roberto Soriano’s strike too central to trouble Perin. Nonetheless, Davide Ballardini made the surprising tactical decision to haul Eboa Ebongue back off again just 29 minutes after coming on.
A free kick was floated to the back post and knocked back from the by-line, but Takehiro Tomiyasu flicked it over from six yards, then Musa Barrow’s set play curled just wide.
