SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 17 - 11 Jan 2021 (19.45 UK)
Spezia 2 - 1 Sampdoria
Terzi 20 (Sp), Candreva 24 (Sa), Nzola 60 (Sp)
Stadio Alberto Picco

Spezia won their first Serie A game at the Stadio Picco, when Claudio Terzi and M'Bala Nzola scored on either side of Antonio Candreva’s spectacular goal.

Spezia hosted Sampdoria for the 91st match between teams from Liguria in Serie A and the home side started best.

Fabio Quagliarella started on the bench for the visitors, but a beautiful first half took place at the Picco.

Spezia started the match better, with two good chances from Nzola, but it was Claudio Terzi who opened the scoring after 20 minutes.

Sampdoria reacted and immediately threatened to equalise, pushing the newly promoted side back.

In the 24th minute, Candreva started and finished a beautiful counterattack.

Keita Balde found Mikkel Damsgaard, who pushed the ball out to Jakub Jankto. The Czech winger crossed it to Candreva, who was free on the other side and Ivan Provedel in the Spezia goal couldn’t do anything with the former Inter man’s bicycle kick.

The tempo decreased but Spezia continued to push for another goal, but the two sides went to the break with one each.

Both sides showed more nerves in the second half and without any changes to either line-ups, Spezia continued to test the Blucerchiati defence.

Tommaso Pobega eventually won a penalty for the home side, when Morten Thorsby gave the referee a chance to blow his whistle, nudging the Milan loanee in the back.

Nzola was calm and collected as he slotted home the spot kick. Emil Audero guessed the right corner, but the finish was drilled into the bottom corner, out of reach for the goalkeeper.

Yoshida was very close to finding the back of the net in stoppages, when he met a free kick with a flying header, but the ball went just wide.

Spezia can celebrate their first Serie A win at the Stadio Picco, with three vital points from a tight match. The second-half penalty separated the two sides tonight.
