Juan Musso made a fantastic save on Lautaro Martinez, but ultimately Inter just didn’t do enough to beat Udinese and missed out on the Winter Champions title.
The Nerazzurri still had a chance of taking the Winter Champions title if they won and Milan simultaneously lost to Atalanta, giving them the edge on goal difference. However, while the Rossoneri did indeed lose 3-0, Inter couldn’t get the full points.
Antonio Conte had practically a full squad, missing only Danilo D’Ambrosio, while the Friulani were without Mato Jajalo, Ignacio Pussetto, Stefano Okaka and Fernando Forestieri. It was likely to be Kevin Lasagna’s farewell ahead of a move to Verona.
Udinese pressed very high and Inter got away with an Alessandro Bastoni error, as Rodrigo De Paul accidentally handled.
Lautaro Martinez had the ball in the net on the half-volley, but was in an offside position when he ran onto the long pass.
Jens Stryger-Larsen’s towering header skimmed the crossbar, but Juan Musso came to Udinese’s rescue after Rodrigo Becao’s awful back-pass, denying Lautaro Martinez with a one-handed reaction save.
Nicolò Barella skimmed the far top corner with a ferocious volley from the D and Udinese made a surprising change, taking Arslan off after just 33 minutes, fearing he’d get a second yellow card.
Arturo Vidal scuffed his finish into the arms of Musso, while after the break Achraf Hakimi’s first touch let him down in a very promising position.
Udinese had a great chance too, Lasagna laying off a De Paul pass for Roberto Pereyra to blast well over from 14 yards.
Lautaro Martinez at full stretch couldn’t quite connect to the Barella cross from the right, then Hakimi – who was making a lot of simple mistakes and poor first touches – mis-kicked the assist for Romelu Lukaku.
Yet, for all their possession, Udinese threatened to take the lead when Pereyra pulled back for a first-time De Paul strike just wide from the edge of the area, with Samir Handanovic stranded.
It wasn’t Hakimi’s day and his angled drive flashed wide with teammates waiting for the pass. Stefano Sensi risked worse than just a yellow when clinging to Lasagna’s jersey as he was going clear on a Musso goal kick.
Inter’s frustration was growing and Antonio Conte was sent off for dissent at the 91st minute.
