Genoa twice fought back to hold Hellas Verona in a thrilling 2-2 draw, despite going down to 10 men following Luca Pellegrini’s injury, but Kevin Lasagna missed two sitters.
Ivan Juric visited his former club, who were on sensational form since Davide Ballardini took over, including three consecutive home victories. Davide Biraschi was the only absentee for the hosts, while Hellas missed Ebrima Colley, Nikola Kalinic, Pawel Dawidowicz, Federico Ceccherini, Kevin Ruegg and suspended Federico Dimarco.
It was an aggressive Verona start and they took the lead, as Lennart Czyborra gave the ball away, Antonin Barak burst away down the right and pulled it back for Ivan Ilic to place into the top corner from 12 yards with the inside of his left boot.
It really should’ve been 2-0 moments later when Kevin Lasagna went completely clear on goal, shaking off a defender and one-on-one with Mattia Perin, only to incredibly fire wide.
Genoa grew into the game and Miha Zajc’s free kick skimmed the crossbar at the near top corner, while Kevin Strootman’s shot was charged down.
Zajc threatened again on the stroke of half-time, his curler shaving a coat of paint off the far top corner of the goal.
There were three substitutions at the break and they proved decisive immediately. Within three minutes, Mert Cetin had been caught cold on a Perin long kick flicked by Mattia Destro and Eldor Shomurodov shook him off to place the ball into the far bottom corner.
Lasagna missed another huge opportunity for Verona, as he’d done the hard work shaking off two defenders, but then hit the base of the upright from 12 yards.
Verona did restore their lead with Marco Davide Faraoni, as Perin flapped at the Cetin cross from the left, Faraoni took a touch and blasted into the roof of the net from a tricky angle.
Perin had to be at full stretch on a Zaccagni strike, then Genoa poured forward, Gianluca Scamacca testing Marco Silvestri.
However, just as they were pushing for an equaliser, Luca Pellegrini on his comeback pulled his hamstring and all the substitutions had been completed, so Genoa were down to 10 men from the 76th minute.
Daniel Bessa drilled inches wide for Verona, but 10-man Genoa grabbed their deserved equaliser in stoppages. A corner was cleared to the D for Milan Badelj to hit a right-foot rocket past Silvestri.
