Bologna took full advantage of a shaky Lazio, scoring within 80 seconds of a saved Ciro Immobile penalty and making it stick with Nicola Sansone’s scorching volley.
The Biancocelesti had to put their midweek 4-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich behind them, but had little room for squad rotation, as Gonzalo Escalante was suspended, with Diaz Felipe and Stefan Radu injured. Bologna’s Aaron Hickey was banned, with Takehiro Tomiyasu, Mitchell Dijks, Andri Baldursson, Gary Medel, Federico Santander and Paolo Faragò on the treatment table.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was celebrating his birthday, but almost ruined it with a defensive howler in the opening minutes, under pressure from two players in his own six-yard box. He did much better with a free kick that skimmed the near top corner.
Nico Dominguez tripped Joaquin Correa just inside the box in a completely unnecessary foul, as he was going wide. Ciro Immobile stepped up, but the penalty was weak, central and predictable, smothered comfortably by Lukasz Skorupski for the goalkeeper’s second spot-kick save this season. It means Immobile has failed to convert two of his last three Serie A penalties.
Just moments later, Bologna took the lead, as Riccardo Orsolini combined with Roberto Soriano down the right, his shot on the volley was only parried by Pepe Reina for Ibrahima Mbaye to tap in the rebound.
Reina had to get down and beat away a powerful Musa Barrow strike, while Correa wasted a three-against-two counter-attack by stumbling on the ball.
Adama Soumaoro needed a risky tackle on Correa after he’d nutmegged one defender, but Adam Marusic wasted another promising counter at the near post.
Manuel Lazzari sustained a knock to his ankle on the stroke of half-time and made way for Senad Lulic. Lazio poured forward with shots charged down and too close to Skorupski, but again were toothless in attack.
Instead, Bologna doubled their lead with a fantastic team goal. There were numerous quick passes in tight spaces during the build-up, then Barrow hooked back a cross from the by-line at the right for Nicola Sansone’s ferocious right-foot volley from 10 yards.
Lazio continued to push and Skorupski made two good saves, one to claw the ball off the line to prevent an own goal amid a crowd of players, then one-handed when Felipe Caicedo put his finish between Mbaye’s legs.
