This was a relegation tussle and Spezia were still missing Tommaso Pobega, Titas Krapikas, Rafael, Riccardo Marchizza, Juan Manuel Ramos and Federico Mattiello, but top scorer M’Bala Nzola returned after a long lay-off. Parma were without a win in 14 Serie A rounds and went into this without suspended Gaston Brugman and Mattia Bani, injured Gervinho, Roberto Inglese, Graziano Pellè and Joshua Zirkzee. To make matters worse, Andreas Cornelius pulled out with a thigh injury during the warm-up, so Juan Brunetta started.

Although Spezia kept the initiative early on, it was Parma who broke the deadlock with a wonderful strike. Yann Karamoh sprinted down the right, cut back inside Simone Bastoni and fired a left-footed rocket into the far top corner from a tricky angle.

Ivan Provedel had his gloves stung by Valentin Mihaila in a similar move moments later, and Parma doubled their lead with a Brunetta free kick into the six-yard box finding Hernani at full stretch to just graze his studs to send it under the goalkeeper.

Daniele Verde replaced injured Riccardo Saponara and immediately tested Luigi Sepe with a solo run, then Giulio Maggiore got the ball in the net with a precise header from six yards, but it was disallowed because Bastoni was offside before putting in the cross.

Spezia did get their goal eventually, as Maggiore controlled down the right, juggled it forward and whipped in the cross so Emmanuel Gyasi just had to prod it over the line from a couple of yards.

Mihaila tried to immediately restore the two-goal cushion, his rocket beaten away by Provedel, but the counters became rarer and the siege more intensive.

The pressure paid off, as after M’Bala Nzola saw his volley charged down, the move continued and Verde put a ball low and hard into the six-yard box from the left, where Gyasi was again ready to tap in.

It remained open with chances for both sides, including a flying Provedel fingertip save on Juraj Kucka’s free kick in stoppages.
