Rodrigo Palacio scored a hat-trick at the age of 39 to cancel out the Dusan Vlahovic brace, as Bologna held Fiorentina to a 3-3 thriller.
The Rossoblu were practically safe already, but the same certainly could not be said of the Viola, who were just three points clear of the drop zone.
Jerdy Schouten was suspended for the hosts, with Aaron Hickey, Nicola Sansone, Mitchell Dijks, Gary Medel, Nico Dominguez and Federico Santander injured, but Takehiro Tomiyasu returned.
After a Dusan Vlahovic curler went wide, Fiorentina were awarded a penalty for the Adama Soumaoro handling offence. It was a borderline decision, as while his arms were flush to the body, he instinctively stretched a hand as he turned. Vlahovic converted with power, despite Lukasz Skorupski guessing the right angle.
Bologna had penalty appeals too soon after, but Bartlomiej Dragowski made himself big and Riccardo Orsolini ran into him.
The hosts did get their equaliser when Rodrigo Palacio sprung the offside trap on an Emmanuel Vignato through ball and prodded past on-rushing Dragowski.
Fiorentina’s offside trap was failing repeatedly, but this time Dragowski did enough to stop Musa Barrow scoring one-on-one.
Bologna and Vignato had penalty appeals waved away for an at best risky Lorenzo Venuti challenge. Danilo then acrobatically cleared the Sofyan Amrabat cross to prevent a Vlahovic tap-in.
Fiorentina did restore their lead when a Venuti cross was whipped in from the right and Giacomo Bonaventura timed his run perfectly, sliding in to volley from eight yards.
It remained hugely entertaining at the Dall’Ara, as Palacio completed his brace with a glancing header on another splendid Vignato cross from the right.
Moments later, Fiorentina got back in front again with Vlahovic allowed to tap in at the back post on a long Erick Pulgar corner.
Bologna clawed it back yet again with Palacio completing his hat-trick. Vignato was once more the inspiration with a through ball, the offside trap again failed and La Trenza kept his cool.
