Palermo scored twice in two minutes to turn the game around, but a late Hernanes penalty gave Lazio a point in this exhilarating 2-2 draw.
The Biancocelesti were just three points off leaders Juventus and had the opportunity to go joint top for at least a few hours as they visited struggling Palermo, who managed only one point from the previous six rounds. Miroslav Klose, Abdoullay Konko and Ederson missed out with Alvaro Gonzalez and Andre Dias not fit to start. The Sicilians were without Franco Brienza, Andrea Mantovani, Abel Hernandez and the suspended Edgar Barreto.
Samir Ujkani smothered a long-range Hernanes effort in the opening 40 seconds. It was a warning shot, as Lazio took the lead on 10 minutes.
A long Cristian Ledesma ball over the top saw Sergio Floccari get between defenders for a looping header into the far top corner. Ujkani was rooted to the spot as it sailed over him.
Miccoli was ready to equalise as he went on to a through ball and spun round in the box, but stung Federico Marchetti’s palms with a fantastic save. From the resulting corner Salvatore Aronica’s shot was charged down.
Arevalo Rios blasted high and wide, while a sliding Michael Ciani tackle was decisive to stop Miccoli on the counter-attack, as Palermo struggled to create scoring opportunities.
Rios burst into the box and went down, but the referee was very close and waved play on. Replays show there was very little contact with Pedro Cavanda.
A Hernanes daisy-cutter was fingertipped round the base of the post by Ujkani, but Miccoli was booked for dissent after claiming he had been fouled in the build-up.
Lazio did not change players, but did reshuffle their system for the second half with Lorik Cana moving into a three-man defence. Marchetti had to rush off his line to push a pass off the feet of Miccoli after Cavanda’s error.
Santiago Garcia got to the by-line and pulled back for Miccoli, but Ciani was in the right place to charge down from point-blank range.
Floccari hit the back of the net for the second time on 62 minutes when he ran on to a Stefano Mauri through ball and smashed an angled drive across Ujkani, but he was incorrectly flagged offside.
Miccoli scuffed his shot wide from a promising position, but Arevalo Rios got Palermo’s equaliser when a ball was flashed across the face of goal by Andrea Dossena for the Uruguayan to tap in from four yards at the back post.
The Sicilians turned the game around completely moments later with the Lazio defence again looking shaky. Josip Ilicic went down the right, crossed for Miccoli, who with a one-touch pass put it back into the centre for Dybala’s cool finish.
It was a particularly remarkable comeback in the space of two minutes, considering before this game Palermo had not earned a single point once falling behind.
Floccari nodded a Ledesma free kick over from close range, then a shot was charged down by Ezequiel Munoz’s ribcage rather than a hand in the box.
Floccari gathered a pull-back and turned as two defenders came sliding in to get it on his stronger foot, but was brought down by Munoz for a penalty. Hernanes stepped up and buried it to Ujkani’s left despite the goalkeeper guessing the right angle.
It was wide open now, as Steve Von Bergen used his body to block another Floccari attempt, but nobody else was able to find a breakthrough at the Barbera. With the final kick of the game, Miccoli volleyed over in acres of space.
