A pair of Giacomo Bonaventura screamers gave Atalanta a potentially-decisive victory away to Siena.
This was a relegation six-pointer down at the foot of the table. Atalanta had Riccardo Cazzola and Matteo Contini suspended, joining the injured Lionel Scaloni, Luca Cigarini, Giampaolo Bellini and Guido Marilungo. Siena were on a run of three consecutive home wins.
It took just three minutes to break the deadlock, as Giacomo Bonaventura cut in from the left and unleashed a right-foot screamer into the near top corner to put Atalanta in front.
Siena had a triple opportunity to draw level, but Alessio Sestu, then Innocent Emeghara had shots charged down until eventually Alessandro Rosina fired over.
Andrea Consigli had his palm stung by a fierce long-range Rosina effort to turn it out from under the bar, then Dias Felipe attempted a backheel flick that whistled just wide of the near stick.
Gianluca Pegolo parried a German Denis header into the path of Guglielmo Stendardo, but Francesco Della Rocca got a decisive deflection to turn the follow-up wide.
It was mainly Siena in this first half and Emeghara turned off target from a Matteo Rubin pull-back. Atalanta threatened only from set plays and Stefano Lucchini turned a free header over from a corner.
Straight after the restart, Denis unleashed a strike that took a deflection off Felipe to crack against the crossbar.
Rubin burst down the left on the counter and rolled across for Erjon Bogdani, but Lucchini proved decisive in anticipating him for a corner.
Denis threatened again, his header wide from Bonaventura’s cross, and Atalanta doubled their lead at the Stadio Franchi.
Bonaventura sprung the offside trap to chest down a cross and beat Pegolo at the near post.
