Serie A Week 36 - 8 May 2013 (19.45 UK)
Sampdoria 1 - 1
De Silvestri 35 (S), Spolli 68 (C)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Sampdoria are mathematically safe thanks to this draw with Catania and Palermo’s home defeat to Udinese.

While Doria were not quite safe from the threat of relegation yet, the Elefantini were pushing for eighth place and hoped to further improve their record of points in a single Serie A season. Nenad Krsticic was out of action, while the visitors still missed Mariano Andujar and Giuseppe Bellusci due to bans.

Samp wore black armbands and there was a minute’s silence after a container ship crashed into the control tower in the port in Genoa, killing at least seven people last night. The proceeds from this game will be donated to the families of the victims.

Gonzalo Bergessio just failed to get on the end of a Pablo Barrientos assist in front of goal, while Alberto Frison struggled to deny Maxi Lopez at the back post, but it was Samp who broke through.

Lorenzo De Silvestri rose above Giovanni Marchese to nod in a sweeping cross from seven yards.

Catania got their equaliser when a Francesco Lodi free kick was nodded back into the centre by Bergessio for a diving Nicolas Spolli header. There were some suspicions of offside.

Sansone thought he had put Sampdoria back in front when he ran on to a Maxi Lopez assist, but smashed his shot against the upright.
