Serie A Week 38 - 19 May 2013 (14.00 UK)
Atalanta 2 - 2 Chievo
Stendardo 8 (A), Thereau 76, 93 (C), Giorgi 84 (A)
Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia

Cyril Thereau fought back twice to give Chievo a thrilling last-gasp 2-2 draw away to Atalanta.

Both sides had secured their safety, so were free to celebrate in Bergamo. The Orobici welcomed back Guglielmo Stendardo and Luca Cigarini from suspension, while German Denis and Davide Biondini recovered from injury. Chievo missed Sergio Pellissier, Alberto Paloschi, Dario Dainelli, Cristian Puggioni, Nicolas Frey, Luca Rigoni, Seymour and Perparim Hetemaj, so gave 19-year-old Senegalese midfielder N’Diaye Djiby his Serie A debut.

Atalanta wore special jerseys marking the anniversary of their 1963 Coppa Italia triumph. Daniele Capelli was given his first Serie A appearance since November 2011, as he ruptured knee ligaments and fractured his kneecap.

Ciro Polito was given a rare start in goal and almost gave away the opener after four minutes, as he went walkabout and was left stranded outside his box, but Chievo hesitated and failed to take advantage.

Moments later, Atalanta broke the deadlock. It was more chaotic defending, as a corner was not cleared properly and Stendardo was free for a diving header from a couple of yards.

German Denis couldn’t turn quickly enough in the box and saw himself crowded out by the time he got the shot away.

Lorenzo Squizzi got down well to push a Carlos Carmona daisy-cutter round the base of the near post. Atalanta lost Giuseppe De Luca to a back injury before the break, so Marko Livaja made his comeback after he was frozen out for punching teammate Ivan Radovanovic in training.

Polito smothered a Boukary Drame free kick that pierced the wall, but Livaja really should’ve scored on 50 minutes.

The Inter-owned striker did great work to shake off defenders, running the ball along the sole of his boot, only to then waste the finish by firing straight at Squinzi.

Gennaro Sardo’s screamer skimmed the upright. Livaja had the ball in the back of the net with a glancing header, although he was flagged offside. The young forward didn’t notice and whipped off his shirt to climb into the stands with the ultras, only later realising it had been annulled and he was booked.

Denis went extremely close when he pounced on a loose ball from Carmona from 12 yards, but Paul Papp got a crucial deflection.

Cigarini sparked a counter-attack that Livaja flashed across the face of goal, but it was Chievo who managed to draw level.

Cyril Thereau went clear down the left and placed his left-foot angled drive through the goalkeeper’s legs into the far bottom corner.

Chievo almost turned the game around, as Thereau exchanged passes with Da Silva to volley just over the bar. Teenager Ali Sowe scuffed a shot wide as he slipped.

Just as Chievo were pouring forward, Atalanta restored their lead against the run of play. The ball was not cleared properly on the edge of the box and Luigi Giorgi thumped a fine shot on the volley that bounced right in front of the goalkeeper.

Deep into stoppages, a corner bounced around the box until Thereau side-footed into the net from seven yards to silence the home crowd.
