Torino were remarkably clinical on the counter to earn a surprise 2-0 win away to Udinese, their first victory here in 29 years.
The Friulani welcomed back Antonio Di Natale from injury, though Luis Muriel and Matias Ranegie were still out of action and Maurizio Domizzi suspended. Marcelo Larrondo and Cesare Bovo missed out for the Granata, who were on fine form after seven points from the last three rounds.
Toro hadn’t won at the Stadio Friuli since a 1-0 result in October 1984 and hadn’t even picked up a point here since December 2002.
In the opening minute Di Natale tested Daniele Padelli’s reflexes, then the goalkeeper dived at his feet to intercept a dangerous Allan assist from the right.
Ciro Immobile should’ve done better when sent through on the counter by Alessio Cerci, but ballooned over the bar.
Immobile had another great chance soon after, but once again his finishing left something to be desired.
Cerci was squeezed out by two defenders when running on to a misplaced Alexander Farnerud assist in the box. Maicosuel was thrown on for the second half in a bid to pep up the disappointing Udinese attack.
However, it was Torino who took the surprise lead at the Stadio Friuli. Gabriel Silva’s error sparked a counter-attack and Farnerud kept his cool to lob Zeljko Brkic.
Dusan Basta tried to get Udinese back on level terms with a rocket from distance, but Padelli did well to fingertip it out from under the bar.
A scorching Nico Lopez strike whistled just off target, as Toro sat back to protect their 1-0 lead and hoped to hit Udinese on the counter-attack.
Maicosuel hesitated and allowed the defence to clear, then fired over the bar, but Toro’s tactics paid off.
Mattia Darmian went on a counter-attack and pulled back his cross for a simple Immobile header, making it 2-0 for the visitors.
Andrea Lazzari’s bullet header from a corner whistled inches past the near post, then Padelli had to be at full stretch to palm a Migjen Basha volley round the base of the far stick.
Udinese wasted a golden opportunity when a cross into the middle was passed around, as nobody felt confident enough to take the shot.
