Ezequiel Schelotto cancelled out an Isaac Cofie opener, as Genoa earned a 1-1 draw to slow Parma’s progress.
Cesare Prandelli was in the stands to view Antonio Cassano, who is back in contention for a World Cup call after his stunning form and the Ducali’s 16-round unbeaten run. Marco Marchionni was suspended and Walter Gargano injured, while Gabriel Paletta returned from a ban. Genoa had Stefano Sturaro on the disciplinary record, but Alberto Gilardino was rested with Luca Antonelli and Sime Vrsaljko sidelined.
There was a great chance in the first three minutes, as Massimo Gobbi burst into the box with a give-and-go, but fired over when Amauri was furious the ball wasn’t squared to him.
Cassano, Ezequiel Schelotto and Amauri combined moments later for Mattia Perin to smother from point-blank range.
Bad news for Genoa, as Francelino Matuzalem hobbled off with a suspected calf strain, making way for Andrea Bertolacci.
However, Genoa took the lead somewhat against the run of play with Cofie, who was returning from suspension. He ran on to a Moussa Konate through ball down the right and drilled across Antonio Mirante from a tight angle.
Moments later Amauri’s acrobatic volley looped inches past the far top corner. Parma did get their equaliser when a free kick was not cleared effectively and Schelotto hit a missile from 12 yards into the far top corner. The power was such that Perin didn’t even have time to move.
Marco Parolo’s blockbuster from distance swerved wide and after the restart Gianni Munari curled just over the bar from the edge of the box.
Emanuele Calaio’s glancing header whistled past the far post from a Nicolas Burdisso cross. At the other end, Burdisso was booked for dangerous play after accidentally kicking Cassano in the face.
Amauri’s diving header was off target under pressure from Burdisso, but Parolo really should’ve scored when sent clear by a Cassano free kick and only scuffed his finish straight at Mattia Perin.
Parolo again went close, unable to get strong contact on a Mattia Cassani corner whipped to the back post.
Amauri also nodded wide and Paolo De Ceglie’s cross-shot clipped the top of the crossbar before Gilardino was finally introduced for the last 10 minutes.
Amauri’s glancing header was going in at the far post, but Perin flew across the face of goal for a decisive fingertip save.
Perin also tipped a deflected Raffaele Palladino over the bar in stoppages.
