SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 1 - 31 Aug 2014 (17.00 UK)
Atalanta 0 - 0
Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia

Verona had the better scoring opportunities, but Atalanta held out for a 0-0 draw in Bergamo.

This is something of a grudge match and tension in Bergamo was high for the opening game of the season. Daniele Baselli, Valerio Rosseti and Salvatore Molina missed out for the hosts, while Andrea Consigli was dropped ahead of his move to Sassuolo. It was a battle of the veteran hitmen between German Denis and Luca Toni.

Hellas slowly started to take control, as Marco Sportiello stuck out a foot to deny Bosko Jankovic and got back up to smother the Toni follow-up shot.

Marcelo Estigarribia and Emil Hallfredsson long-range efforts could’ve been better. Maxi Moralez had a great opportunity when sliding on to an Estigarribia pull-back, but ballooned over from six yards.

Toni surprisingly scuffed a free header wide on a corner, then Verona wasted another golden opportunity. This time Juanito Gomez Taleb fired straight at Sportiello when one-on-one.

Atalanta threatened too, Richmond Boakye completely mistiming his header from a Luca Cigarini free kick and getting a yellow card for handling while he was at it.
