Serie A Week 3 - 21 Sep 2014 (14.00 UK)
Genoa 1 - 0 Lazio
Pinilla 87 (G)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Lazio dominated at Marassi and wasted numerous chances, but Stefan de Vrij saw red and Mauricio Pinilla gave Genoa victory.

The Grifone were still looking for their first win of the season and risked distraction ahead of the midweek Derby della Lanterna against Sampdoria. Facundo Roncaglia was suspended after a creditable 0-0 draw at Fiorentina, while Lazio missed Stefan Radu, Ederson and Alvaro Gonzalez following a 3-0 demolition job on Cesena. Alessandro Matri got his first start in a Genoa jersey.

The Aquile have a poor record at Marassi, suffering three consecutive defeats since their last win here in 2009-10.

Filip Djordjevic prodded a Felipe Anderson assist inches wide under pressure from Nicolas Burdisso, then the Brazilian set up Marco Parolo to force a Mattia Perin save from point-blank range.

It was a siege on the Genoa goal and Perin got down brilliantly for a one-handed save at the near bottom corner on Senad Lulic.

Parolo turned wide after Edson Braafheid used his strength to barge Diego Perotti off the ball at the by-line. Djordjevic also nodded over the bar with Perin seemingly beaten, as Lazio dominated early on and couldn’t make it count.

Genoa did have a chance on the counter, but Etrit Berisha smothered at the feet of Juraj Kucka. It was still mainly Lazio, but Perin again beat away a Felipe Anderson effort with the Antonio Candreva follow-up charged down.

Genoa continued to ride their luck, as Djordjevic’s glancing header left Perin rooted to the spot, but cracked against the crossbar and bounced back off the ground.

Felipe Anderson ran into the box on a Candreva through ball and somehow managed to trip over his own feet. Lazio also lost Lucas Biglia to injury before the break and Dusan Basta during half-time.

Genoa gave Belgian starlet Maxime Lestienne his Serie A debut as the Biancocelesti siege ran out of steam.

Candreva’s glancing header skimmed the far post with Perin beaten on Braafheid’s cross, but Lazio had a hat-trick of injuries with Santiago Gentiletti also forced off the field.

Mauricio Pinilla knocked down a cross for Lestienne to fire over the bar, then the Chile international volleyed wide from 12 yards in a great opportunity created by Andrea Bertolacci.

Candreva went on the counter and stung Perin’s gloves, but Lazio went down to 10 men in the final minutes. Stefan de Vrij received a second yellow card for a handling offence.

That proved a decisive turning point, as moments later Genoa took the lead. Perotti got a header at the back post and it might’ve gone in, but Pinilla made sure with a diving finish.

Deep into stoppages Candreva's free kick was deflected wide, but Berisha came up for the corner to no avail.
