Inter ended their Atalanta taboo at San Siro with a stunning Daniel Osvaldo goal, despite Rodrigo Palacio’s saved penalty.
The Orobici had won the last two editions of the Lombardy Derby at San Siro, drawing another, but were fresh from a 1-0 home defeat to Fiorentina. German Denis was rested, while Rodrigo Palacio got his first start of the season. In a 1-1 at Palermo on Sunday, the Nerazzurri conceded their first goal of the campaign between Serie A and Europa League.
Luca Cigarini fired over after Fredy Guarin was dispossessed, then from a corner Gary Medel’s strike whistled just wide. Inter had two great chances in quick succession, as Nemanja Vidic’s looping header thumped against the far post. Moments later Palacio forced a save out of Marco Sportiello.
Mateo Kovacic curled off target from a Guarin counter, but the hosts lost Mauro Icardi to a suspected sprained knee.
Inter received a penalty for Yohan Benalouane’s challenge on Andrea Ranocchia, but Palacio stepped up and saw his spot-kick well saved by Sportiello.
The deadlock was eventually broken in some considerable style, as Daniel Osvaldo performed a stunning scissor-kick volley in mid-air on a Guarin free kick.
Palacio caught a defender in possession and drilled his angled drive on to the inside of the far post. Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez tested Samir Handanovic from distance.
Hernanes made sure of the victory late on with a rocket of a free kick, a ground-to-air missile that flew past a helpless Sportiello.
