Sassuolo fumbled the lead three times at Marassi, as Genoa refused to give up in this six-goal thriller.

The Grifone appeared to lose their mojo around Christmas, picking up one point from four rounds to plummet down the standings. A victory here would put Sassuolo on level terms with Genoa in the table.

Both sides had absentees, as Diego Perotti, Sebastien De Maio, Sime Vrsaljko and Paolo Cannavaro were all suspended, plus Gianluca Pegolo, Saphir Taider, Tino Costa, Alessandro Matri and Giovanni Marchese sidelined.

Nicola Sansone should’ve opened the scoring early on, but tried to dribble round Mattia Perin and eventually the goalkeeper parried with his stomach at the near post.

Perin acrobatically kept out a Matteo Brighi header, but as the move continued Domenico Berardi was tripped by Maxime Lestienne. Berardi got back up to convert the penalty, even though Perin got his hand to it.

It was almost 2-0, as Perin parried from Simone Zaza and Facundo Roncaglia charged down the Berardi follow-up.

Just as Sassuolo were pushing hard, Genoa got the equaliser against the run of play. Iago Falque ran on to Lestienne’s through ball and delicately chipped the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Sassuolo restored their advantage straight after the restart, as Genoa completely failed to deal with a corner and Simone Missiroli tapped in the loose ball from five yards. Perin protested that Missiroli had shoved him in the face, which is why he fumbled the cross.

However, Genoa got themselves back on level terms yet again, as Francesco Magnanelli lost possession in midfield to spark a Iago Falque counter and Ioannis Fetfatzidis kept his cool to dribble round the goalkeeper.

It remained wide open and Lestienne tested Andrea Consigli with a powerful angled drive at the near post.

Sassuolo took the lead for the third time at Marassi, as Zaza robbed Armando Izzo on the touchline and pulled back for Berardi to finish with the inside of his boot.

Iago Falque’s chipped pass over the top was a gift for Andrea Bertolacci, who just failed to get the final touch at full stretch. Consigli flew across the face of goal to fingertip Bertolacci’s header round the upright.

Genoa refused to give in and in stoppages Fetfatzidis converted a last-gasp penalty by firing into the near top corner after Magnanelli’s clumsy intervention on Juraj Kucka.
