Atalanta pushed Fiorentina to the last minute, but Alessandro Diamanti and Manuel Pasqual secured a 3-2 victory.
The Viola have found their form recently and knocked Roma out of the Coppa Italia midweek thanks to a Mario Gomez brace. Gonzalo Rodriguez, Juan Manuel Vargas, Giuseppe Rossi, Federico Bernardeschi and Mounir El Hamdaoui missed out. German Denis hoped to give Atalanta another shock away victory after beating Milan at San Siro, but the Orobici hadn’t won this fixture since 1992-93.
There was an early scare when Ciprian Tatarusanu cleared straight to Davide Zappacosta, but Stefan Savic got back for a decisive block.
Fiorentina did not heed the warning and Atalanta took the lead soon after, as Papu Gomez whipped a cross to the back post for Zappacosta’s header, finding Tatarusanu and Manuel Pasqual wanting.
Papu Gomez was on sparkling form down the Atalanta left flank and forced another save out of Tatarusanu, but the hosts equalised with a goal seemingly out of nothing. Mati Fernandez whipped in a free kick and Jose Maria Basanta was allowed to nod in totally unmarked.
Alessandro Diamanti curled not far off target, but Basanta almost completed his brace with a volley over the bar when again completely forgotten by Atalanta.
Mario Gomez was at full stretch and just failed to get a decent contact to Diamanti’s assist, but Tatarusanu prevented a Zappacosta screamer from flying under the bar.
Maxi Moralez is the shortest player in Serie A, but still got a free header on to the side-netting from a corner.
Diamanti tested Marco Sportiello from distance twice in quick succession after the restart, the second time Mario Gomez following it up into an empty net only after he had strayed offside.
Gianpaolo Bellini had to be stretchered off after a freak accident in which his nose was caught by a Mario Gomez elbow.
A corner was flicked on and just beyond Mario Gomez, who was four yards from an open goal, then Guglielmo Stendardo prevented another potential tap-in.
Diamanti put Fiorentina in front for the first time with his return goal in Serie A. The ex-Guangzhou Evergrande man gathered on the edge of the box, dribbled past two defenders and fired across Sportiello with the inside of his foot.
However, Atalanta got back into it for 2-2 with substitute Richmond Boakye. The youngster had just been on the field for four minutes when he ghosted to the back post to tap in a Zappacosta low cross.
It still wasn’t over and Mati Fernandez took advantage of a defensive error to place the ball across the six-yard box for Manuel Pasqual to volley in undisturbed.
