Cesena confirmed their good recent form by squeezing past Udinese thanks to Alejandro Rodriguez.
The Sea Horses were still stuck in penultimate place, but had a real upturn in form recently, including a 2-2 draw with Juventus. However, fresh from defeat to Milan, they had Massimo Volta, Stefano Lucchini and Luigi Giorgi suspended plus Ze Eduardo, Guido Marilungo, Riccardo Cazzola and Andrea Tabanelli sidelined. Udinese were mid-table and still missing Alexandre Geijo and Maurizio Domizzi. They hadn’t played for two weeks, as their last game was called off due to Parma’s financial crisis.
This fixture had been played just five times before in Serie A with two wins each and a single draw. The most recent home victory was back in November 1982.
First touches let down Antonio Di Natale and Cyril Thereau in promising situations early on, while Gaby Mudingayi drilled over the bar. Gregoire Defrel had a quick counter-attack, but fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Muriel’s free kick skimmed the woodwork and Milan Djuric should’ve done a lot better when set up by Defrel, but he ballooned over the bar from a great position.
Cesena had done considerably more and took a deserved lead when Franco Brienza crossed and substitute Alejandro Rodriguez was allowed a free header from five yards.
