Milan 1 - 1 Verona
Bacca 51 (M), Toni pen 57 (V)
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Milan were unable to get the better of bottom club Verona, as Nigel de Jong marked his comeback with a red card.

The Rossoneri were lurching from positive result to negative without any real consistency, so Luiz Adriano was brought in to partner Carlos Bacca, moving M’Baye Niang to the flank. Luca Antonelli, Mario Balotelli and Jeremy Menez were sidelined, while winless Verona missed Rafael, Emil Hallfredsson, Samuel Souprayen, Francelino Matuzalem, Michelangelo Albertazzi and Romulo.

Hellas had never beaten Milan at San Siro in 25 attempts, scraping only 10 draws. Curiously, 38-year-old Luca Toni is older than goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma (16) and Pierluigi Gollini (20) combined.

Verona had a surprisingly strong start and dominated the opening 10 minutes with a series of corners.

M’Baye Niang was moved out wide right and tested the goalkeeper before drilling another attempt just wide of the near post, while Jack Bonaventura’s splendid volley was deflected and Luiz Adriano fired off target undisturbed from 12 yards.

Federico Viviani also turned wide on the counter following a Riccardo Montolivo error, but on the half-hour Bacca’s smart through ball sent Bonaventura clear only to fire straight at Gollini.

Luiz Adriano had the ball in the net, but only after Bacca was incorrectly flagged offside for the cross.

Straight after the restart Gollini decisively clawed a Bonaventura header out from under the bar at the back post.

Milan finally found a way through, as Bacca sprung the offside trap on a Luiz Adriano assist to smash his finish under the bar.

However, the joy was short-lived. Nigel de Jong bundled into the back of Leandro Greco as he was pulling the trigger from 11 yards, prompting an inevitable penalty and red card. Toni, 22 years his senior, sent Donnarumma the wrong way to equalise.

Bacca pulled back from the by-line, but only defender Alessio Romagnoli was in the area and it was behind him. Andrea Bertolacci almost scored a stunner, his volley curling inches past the far top corner.

Gollini used his feet to deny Bonaventura from point-blank range and Milan tried to the end, but with no luck. Bonaventura also had penalty appeals for a coming together with Rafa Marquez.
