Lorenzo Pasciuti made history and helped Carpi to a surprise 2-1 result to end Udinese’s winning streak.
The minnows were finding their feet, winning three of the last seven games in all competition and preparing for Wednesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final at Milan, but missed Ryder Matos, Igor Bubnjic and Fedele. The Friulani had two consecutive victories, but lost Maurizio Domizzi, Giovanni Pasquale and Alexander Merkel.
Carpi had an aggressive start with Paolo Bianco’s shot from a corner saved, but Vid Belec flew to palm a Cyril Thereau screamer round the near post on 16 minutes.
Orestis Karnezis performed a remarkable save one-on-one with Cristian Zaccardo, sticking out a trailing foot to deny the angled drive.
Carpi took the lead through Lorenzo Pasciuti, who was allowed a relatively free header from Bianco’s cross which dipped viciously past Karnezis. It was the midfielder’s debut Serie A goal and means he is the first player ever to score for one club in Serie D, C2, C1, Serie B and the top flight. The 26-year-old has been at the club since 2009.
Gaetano Letizia’s strike flashed wide and Carpi continued to threaten, Jerry Mbakogu not getting enough to his header.
Kevin Lasagna came off the bench and almost doubled their lead, running on to an Antonio Di Gaudio chipped pass to see his scorcher palmed out from under the bar.
Marco Crimi made his Carpi debut and the hosts went 2-0 up when Lasagna pulled back from the by-line for Lorenzo Lollo to fire under the bar from seven yards. It was also his first Serie A strike.
Duvan Zapata marked his return from injury this week with a goal, springing the offside trap on a lucky ricochet to place an angled drive past Belec at the near post.
Udinese were suddenly revitalised and Emmanuel Badu hit the upright with a back-heel flick from a chaotic corner.
Late on Carpi wasted two great chances to round out the scoreline, as Lasagna just failed to get on the end of Mbakogu's assist and the Italian's shot was too close to the goalkeeper.
