SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 21 - 24 Jan 2016 (19.45 UK)
Juventus 1 - 0 Roma
Dybala 77 (J)
Juventus Stadium

Paulo Dybala was decisive again as Juventus beat Roma 1-0 for their 11th consecutive Serie A victory.

The Bianconeri were seeking an 11th straight Serie A win, while the Giallorossi had their second game under Luciano Spalletti following Rudi Garcia’s dismissal. Roma moved to three at the back, but Douglas Maicon and transfer-listed Gervinho missed out.

The Lupi hadn’t won here for precisely six years and one day, since a 2-1 result on January 23 2010, managing a draw and three consecutive defeats.

Daniele De Rossi got an early booking for an off the ball clash with Mario Mandzukic, while Paulo Dybala and Alessandro Florenzi had long-range attempts straight at the goalkeepers. Dybala hit the bar with a delightful control and lob, but only after being flagged offside.

Patrice Evra had a volley charged down and on the rebound Paul Pogba just failed to get the final touch. Florenzi also did just enough to put Pogba off on a header, then at the other end completely scuffed his volley at the back post.

Miralem Pjanic handled in the box, but Juve’s penalty appeals were void because the referee had already stopped play for a push on De Rossi.

On the stroke of half-time, Dybala’s attempt was too weak to trouble Wojciech Szczesny.

It was more even after the break, as Roma did try to attack, but Mandzukic was booked for lashing out an arm on Antonio Rudiger.

Radja Nainggolan’s control and volley was deflected just over the bar by Pogba and substitute Juan Guillermo Cuadrado tested Szczesny low at the near post.

On 69 minutes Pogba flicked on a Cuadrado cross with his heel, Mandzukic spread it to the left and Evra’s fierce strike was beaten away from point-blank range by Szczesny’s ribs.

The breakthrough arrived when Pogba waited for the right moment to send a through ball, Dybala sprung the offside trap to control with the inside of the left boot and steer a snooker shot past Szczesny into the far bottom corner.

Dzeko had the ball in the net, but only after play had been stopped for his nudge on Andrea Barzagli.

A Miralem Pjanic free kick was deflected to skim the crossbar after a series of shots were charged down, as Roma started to lay siege on the Juve goal.
