Fiorentina ended their six-round negative streak by beating Sassuolo, including a comical own goal.
The Viola saw their campaign unravelling with just four draws in the last six rounds. Davide Astori was suspended with Khouma Babacar injured, while the visitors missed Simone Missiroli, Luca Antei, Karim Laribi, Alessandro Gazzola and Emanuele Terranova. Nicola Sansone was not fit enough to start.
It was an aggressive start from the hosts and Matias Vecino drilled inches past the upright after catching Alfred Duncan in possession.
Fiorentina broke through within 10 minutes, as Andrea Consigli did not read a Milan Badelj cross and Gonzalo Rodriguez was able to nod in relatively undisturbed.
Marcos Alonso had the ball in the net with a splendid volley, but play was already halted for a Nikola Kalinic shove on Paolo Cannavaro.
Gregoire Defrel somehow failed to equalise, as he beat the offside trap in a two against one situation, but ballooned over the bar.
The Fiorentina defence was caught out yet again by Domenico Berardi, but Ciprian Tatarusanu just about remained inside the penalty area when blocking the lob with his elbow.
Josip Ilicic sent Kalinic through the middle, but Consigli came flying out to narrow the angle and parry.
The Viola offside trap continued to stutter and they were finally made to pay when Defrel burst forward from midfield and generously rolled across for Berardi to fire in from 16 yards.
However, within 90 seconds Ilicic had restored Fiorentina’s advantage with a splendid volley from the D on Marcos Alonso’s assist.
Matteo Politano’s wayward effort turned into an assist for Francesco Acerbi, who deflected it inches wide off his heel. Fiorentina also threatened another, Kalinic turning well only to skim the upright.
Federico Bernardeschi did have the ball in the net after sliding in to meet the rebound from an Alonso free kick that came off the bar, but he was in an offside position.
The hosts did get their third in the strangest way possible. Consigli controlled a back-pass and tried to kick it towards Acerbi, but somehow scuffed it so badly that it rolled into his own net from five yards. It was an astonishing howler that we’ll no doubt see again and again for many years on comedy shows.
Sassuolo didn’t give in, as Berardi’s spectacular volley flashed just off target.
